Harlem Children Society: Bird’s Eye View

ORGANIZATION HIGHLIGHTS: 2009

 

*Intensive Summer and After-School All-Year-Round Hands-on Research Internships in SCIENCE, MEDICINE, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS for Under resourced and Under-served High School and Undergraduate Students in Leading Institutions across New York Tri-State Area, across the US and a Global program spanning several continents.

 

*NINE years since inception - Exponential growth and positive response from community.

*All student Interns are from Under-resourced and Under-served backgrounds, neighborhoods and school districts.

*EIGHT-week summer program for new students and all year round After School Program After School Program provides students the opportunity to extend their research exploration.

*Students receive a SUBSTANTIAL stipend.

*High School (Grades 7-12) and Undergraduate Students grew from 3 in 2001 to OVER 768 worldwide.

*New York program alone involves over 331 students in 2009.

*A National program includes over 415 students in 2009: 331 students in New York; 9 in New Jersey; 2 in Connecticut; 2 in Massachusetts; 3 in Pennsylvania; 3 in Michigan; 3 in Minnesota; 30 in Washington D.C.; 9 in New Orleans; 16 in Hopi & Navajo reservations in Arizona, and several in other Indian reservations (Oklahoma: 3; New Mexico: 2; Ahkwesasne, New York: 1; North Carolina: 1, Minnesota: 3; Oklahoma: 1).

*A Global program encompasses OVER 353 more students in Central & Latin America, Africa, Asia, Europe and Australasia: 100 students in Ethiopia, 50 in Kenya, 30 in Tanzania, 30 in Ghana, 12 in Mexico, 6 in Honduras, 110 in Chennai and 10 in Kolkata in India, 3 in Algeria, I in Moldova, 1 in New Zealand.

*About 58% of the students are Young Women in the U.S.

*In the U.S., about 96% of the students in 2009 are from minority backgrounds:

·         ~38% are African American

·         ~22% Hispanic

·         ~18% Asian

·         ~10% Native American, and

·         ~3% Caucasian

*Year 2009 has over 1500 Mentors in over 200 Institutions assisting and mentoring 415 students from over 200 schools in U.S. alone.

*Year 2008 saw over 1000 Mentors in over 100 Institutions assisting and mentoring 300 students from over 100 schools in U.S. alone.

*Year 2007 saw over 375 Mentors in 75 Institutions assisting and mentoring 230 students from 65 schools.

*Year 2006 saw over 250 Mentors in 50 Institutions mentoring 183 students from 50 schools.

*Students inducted as interns at prestigious Universities & institutions such as – Kennedy Space Center, NASA, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Rockefeller Univ., Cornell Univ., Columbia Univ., Hunter College, New York Univ., Fordham University, American Museum of Natural History, Stevens Institute of Technology, Mt. Sinai Hospital, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Los Alamos Research Center, NPR Science Friday, St. Johnson’s Univ. and others.

*Students encouraged competing at several regional, national and international science conferences and competitions.

*Past awards and accolades include participation in several regional and national competitions and programs such as – several “Gates Millennium Scholarships”, “Posse Scholarships” (award $150,000), “New York Times Scholarships” (award $30,000), Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society Students Poster Competitions, “National Symposia - around the Tri-state area, Chicago, San Diego, Colorado, and many others.

*OUR STUDENTS ARE in the several reputed Universities . . .Columbia, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, Bobst, Connecticut, Drexel, Franklin Marshall, Dartmouth College, Ithaca College, New Paltz, Hunter College, Lehman, Syracuse, Bard College, Smith College, NYU, Penn State, Buffalo State, Norfolk State, Florida State U. - Veterinary Program, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Tennessee Technological University, Steven's Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Babson College, St. John's, Swarthmore, Binghamton, Boston College, Drexel, Univ. of Rochester an Central Florida, Arizona, Northern Arizona University, Rensselaer Polytechnic University (RPI), Rutgers Univ., UNJMD - 7-year Medical and MD/PhD Programs, and others.

 

 

STUDENT PROJECT SPECIFICS

*Students are given a thorough background related to their individual research projects. Students undergo rigorous training on the techniques, safe and proper handling of devices, instruments, chemicals and biological. Students are allocated individual projects. Guidance and background is given to enable them to build self-confidence and presentation skills. Students summarize their work and present their results in weekly ‘Harlem Children Society’ conferences held at Rockefeller University. Students submit project reports at the end of the project. Scientists and researchers give frequent lectures and tutorials.

2009 will feature our FIRST Glocal Harlem Science Yatra (Parade) and our SIXTH Glocal Harlem Science Street Fairs & Festivals.
