HCS’s effectiveness is measured by the number of students who successfully complete our program and pursue careers in science or technology. We will continue to track our student’s path long after they leave HCS. The long-term outcomes we plan to track are the number of students who pursue science or technology as a course of study, the number of students who receive their college degrees, and the number of students who work in the science or technology field after undergraduate or matriculate into a science or technology graduate program. Monitoring student performance, soliciting feedback from teachers and reviewing academic records will measure the short-term outcomes of our work. These outcomes include improved verbal communication skills – the ability to present complex ideas in simple terms, improved writing skills, improved academic performance, and increased parental involvement. We will administer evaluation forms to both students and mentors to solicit feedback regarding their experience and perception of the program. These collective feedbacks are implemented to make program improvements or changes and continually monitor our effectiveness.
These involvements, we feel, will help better the performance and abilities of students in your school - improving their science and math and develop scientific mind and intellect. This guidance will serve a long way to further their higher education needs and aspirations. Our involvements also foster the indirect development of other students and involve parents and guardians to facilitate a better understanding of sciences and education.
HCS has developed and demonstrated a sound and successful model for engaging high school students from underserved communities in scientific research and study that increases their interest in science, improves their study skills and self-confidence, and prepares them for entry into competitive institutions of higher education.
We can proudly say that this program has evolved, in a short period, into one of the biggest and one of the best programs of its kind – not only in the country, but anywhere!
Harlem Children Society has established itself as one of the best sought after programs not only in New York City, but also the Tristate area, and nationally as well. In a relatively short time, we have established ourselves as one of the best programs of its kind anywhere. It is that commitment to enhancing and nurturing our future science potential and creating awareness in the sciences, which we do not intend to compromise.
One hundred percent of our graduated students are in various leading universities, seeking higher education. Most are still in the sciences. Many are in reputable learning centers like – Cornell, Swarthmore, Dartmouth, and others. Not only these students are establishing themselves in their educational careers, but also, they are, even at this stage, sought after by pharmaceutical firms to join their facilities. We take great pride in the fact that we follow our students and give them a sense of an extended family – to help nurture their potential as responsible citizens of our communities.
We are constantly evaluating ourselves in every step of our program: from identifying and selection of the students and mentors; following the research that the students undertake constantly during the whole program; educating the students of other fields in the sciences through our bi-weekly seminars, workshops, & lectures; taking and encouraging the students to present their research work at local, national and international conferences and symposia; and taking them on site visits to various centers of innovation. At the seminars, we make it a point to see that they are able to present their work professionally. At these meetings, we also invite other experts to give talks in the various scientific fields; including financial advice (which is critical at their stage of development), and guide on various scholarships and admissions requirements. We take great pride in our students – and therefore never leave them. We follow our students right through their development in their universities and beyond. We frequently tap into our past graduates to be our spokespeople for their younger counterparts – thereby, setting up criteria and standards that the incoming students follow.
The other important aspect of our program is the ‘Harlem Science Street Fair and Festivals’ – which is another venue where we promote science awareness and our seed development in the masses. The students compete with others of different backgrounds, and therefore enhance their confidence in presentation skills. We guide our students - to talk the talk of the masses (who have little involvement in the sciences and/or their fields of research). This therefore creates an immense sense of pride in our students, and therefore in us - when our products participate in their social interactions in a way that they become responsible citizens of their neighborhoods and society. It is that social responsibility within us, that we feel is of utmost importance and significance, that is our sole measure of performance.
We work in close association with the science teachers, principals, other educators, and administrators, to build a program that is very comprehensive and evolve a partnership to make them an integral part of our program. Thereby, having a far greater impact in the educational and developmental process – between the teacher and the taught!
Therefore, we can say that we have developed and keep our commitment to generating a cadre of young minds and spirit who take science, math and engineering education very seriously and develop within them a sense of social responsibility that they can take great pride in. It is with that goal in mind that we hope to better humanity, through education, kindred spirit, and develop a keen sense of discipline to strive towards our goals of common betterment and entrepreneurial spirit.
Evaluation
Short-term:
In order to continually monitor our effectiveness, we:
- Monitor individual student performance,
- Request teacher feedback in the areas of:
- Academic verbal communication skills;
- The ability to present complex ideas in simple terms;
- Improved writing skills and academic performance;
- And increased parental involvement. Evaluation forms are administered to both students and mentors to solicit feedback regarding their experience and perception of the program.
Long-term:
HCS’s overall effectiveness is measured by the number of students who successfully complete our program and pursue careers in science or technology.
To date:
- 100% of HCS students go on to college;
- Over 20% attending Ivy League university;
- 80% majoring in science and/or math.
Some participating students have been published in medical journals, written scientific presentations, and participated in top scientific symposia. Some participating students have been awarded such honors as the Gates Millennium & New York Times, and several Posse Scholarships ($100,000), among other distinctive awards.
We take great pride in our students – and are committed to maintaining their involvement in our program’s goals. We follow our students through their development in their universities and beyond. We frequently tap into our past graduates to be our spokespeople to their younger counterparts, serving as role models for incoming students.
