FOURTH ANNUAL SCIENCE BOAT CRUISE FOR OVER 250 UNDER-PRIVILEDGED STUDENTS FROM 75 NYC SCHOOLS

Showcasing Science & Society Showcases

Non-profit organization to provide under-privileged high-school science students with unique opportunity to showcase their research on a journey through the Hudson River

New York, NY – August 10, 2010 – Harlem Children Society (HCS), a non-profit organization serving disadvantaged youths by placing them in paid science internships, a majority from under-served and under-resourced communities, will have its 4th annual “Science Boat Cruise” on the Hudson. The event is made possible thanks in part to a generous donation from Harlem businessman Marvin Robbins Jr., president and CEO of ASTRO Communications.  Earlier in the summer, Robbins was a guest lecturer at one of the weekly seminars HCS holds for students at Rockefeller University.

The boat cruise offers an opportunity for the students to make connections with mentors, parents, and other students in a festive environment. The event brings a touch of levity to the serious science in which HCS students are engaged throughout the summer where they perform one-on-one hands-on science research in a myriad of fields in science, technology, math & engineering (STEM) with accomplished mentors in leading universities, hospitals, and research centers during the summer and continuing into the school year.

"We do such events because I believe in creating a good experience," said Dr. Sat Bhattacharya, a molecular geneticist at Memorial Sloan Kettering who is the founder and president of Harlem Children Society.  “Every dollar counts so we are extremely grateful for Mr. Robbins’ generous contribution.”

HCS students and families will feature a “Science and Society Showcase.”  Aimed at nurturing and fostering unique creative talent combining arts and sciences, these features encourage dialogue among students, families, local communities and the scientific establishment. The cruise is designed to provide a moment of well-deserved leisure, while making a serious effort at encouraging creative talent for the HCS students, in what is otherwise a demanding summer devoted to their intensive, hands-on science research in STEM and Allied Sciences, in which the students are currently fully engaged. During the cruise, each student will present a musical or theatrical interpretation of their research in a talent show judged by the staff of HCS. HCS sponsors and engages these students in activities and events, cultural and educational – that are innovative at student recruitment in the sciences.

The cruise is an event filled with food & festivity and demonstrates how science can be relevant and fun in our everyday lives.  This year’s trip is hosted by Spirit Cruises on their ship "The Spirit of New York.” The “Science Boat Cruise” will be on Thursday August 12, 2010 from 11:00 am to 3:30 PM and will leave from Chelsea Piers at West 23rd Street in New York City.

Harlem Children Society (HCS) was founded in 2000 by a Molecular cancer geneticist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Dr. Satyajit Bhattacharya (Dr. Sat). Serving primarily disadvantaged students (95% minority, with over 58% young women) in the NY region, in communities across the United States, and now applying its unique model in other countries, HCS International's innovative program engages students in one-on-one mentoring and hands-on research in a wide range of fields in science, technology, math, engineering, and social sciences in leading universities, research centers, and renowned institutions.
