Sheveen began her relationship with Harlem Children Society in 2002 while she was a student at Frederick Douglass Academy in West Harlem. Along with two other interns, she spent the summer as an intern in the Minimal Residual Laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center under the direct supervision of Dr. Sat Bhattacharya. She was entrusted with a very sophisticated project entitled Detection and Characterization of Circulating Cancer Cells from Cancer Patients. It was there that she was introduced to and allowed to operate some of the most advanced Genetic Engineering Technologies. Her experiences in the lab helped her to see how the spirit of inquiry and the use of some of the most advanced technological equipment could lead to life-saving scientific breakthroughs.
Sheveen graduated from Frederick Douglass Academy as Salutatorian in June 2003. In addition to this honor, she also received several scholarships totaling over $150,000. These included the prestigious New York Times Scholarship, United Federation of Teachers Albert Shanker College Scholarship, BP Community College Scholarship and the Swarthmore College Scholarship.
While at Swarthmore College Sheveen was very active in the campus community and received the Director’s Recognition Award in April 2007 for her contributions. She worked closely with the Deans Office and other college faculty as Worth Health Center Associate, Career Services Assistant and Party Associate Coordinator. Sheveen was also Co-President of Swarthmore Students of Caribbean Ancestry (SOCA) group, as well as, Civic and Political Action Committee Coordinator of Swarthmore African Students Society group. Sheveen is very dedicated to bringing about social change by empowering the youth and to this end she has been a mentor and tutor in numerous Swarthmore College support programs serving students from under-resourced schools and communities such as, Dare to Soar and Saturday Cultural Institute. In November 2006, she received a Swarthmore Foundation Grant to carry out a community service project aimed at increasing literacy rate in her hometown of St. Mary, Jamaica.
Sheveen received her BA from Swarthmore College in June of 2007, where she majored in French and completed extensive coursework in Biology. Sheveen, who has been a member on the HCS Board of Student Managers since 2003, has recently joined the HCS staff as a Development Intern and has plans of being with us as she makes preparations to apply to medical school. She is amazed at how much HCS has grown since she was a student in the program and looks forward to being an active participant in the organization’s continued development. Sheveen is excited about returning to Harlem Children Society in another capacity because the organization’s mission and her personal goals for bringing about social change are so closely intertwined. Sheveen always speaks about how her experience as an HCS student has helped her to realize her potential and has shaped her present success, “Without the support of Dr. Sat and HCS I don’t think I would have made it this far and I am grateful for the organization’s continuous support in my journey to make all my educational dreams become a reality. I am thankful for the opportunity be apart of the HCS family.”
