About:

2006: My name Michaelle Exhume, I currently attend Freeport High School as a senior. Over the summer, I worked at Environmental Testing Labs, Inc. located in Farmingdale, NY, with Patty Els as my mentor and at Freeport High School, under the supervision of Mr. Edward Irwin. There, I worked on my project “Marine Sponges as a Model for Cellular Recognition”, a study done using marine sponges to better understand the immune system, receptor molecules and organ transplants.

My overall experience with the Harlem Children Society was awe-inspiring, I learned a lot from my colleagues and mentors. The Harlem Children Society endowed me with everlasting memories. It gave me an insight of the professional world; hence aiding me to choose my future career. I would recommend this program to any high school students with a profound passion for science research and hard work.

2005: This summer has been a wonderful opportunity for me to learn new things and interact with new people. I was interviewed in June of this year, for this program at my high school, at first I didn't think I would come out of the program learning so much and having the experience that I have now to carry with me for the rest of my life. I think that this program is the best way to spend your summer, working and expending your knowledge on science the best way possible. This summer, I was placed at the Environmental Testing Laboratories, Inc. in Farmingdale, NY. Although it was difficult taking the bus every morning, at the end of the day it was all worth it. This summer I did some research on the procedure TPH method 418.1 and tried to find the best and cheapest way to decontaminate highly hydrocarbon-contaminated soils and liquids, but my study is primarily based on the soil procedure. Basically, TPH method 418.1 is a procedure used to determine the level of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and liquid samples. The EPA, the Environmental Protection Agencies, requires this test so it is important for it to be done in the best and cheapest way possible. This experience also involved weekly talks/seminars. It was kinda fungoing to the weekly seminars because I got to learn about the other students' work and how their experience as a summer intern was. I will carry what I had learned with and from Harlem Children Society for the rest of my life, it was an unforgettable experience. It made my choice of study/career after high school a lot easier.
