About:

My name is Jessica Geffrard. I am in the 12th grade at Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn, NY. I am a very dedicated and determined student, and that willpower allowed me to participate in such a great program. Over the summer, I have participated in this internship program. I was among some other students chosen to work in a lab environment that gives us a chance to broaden our horizons.

After being introduced to this program by my science teacher, I decided to pursue it. I was interviewed by Dr. Sat Bhattacharya, the president and CEO of the Harlem Children Society who selected me. The Harlem Children Society has open the doors for me and allowed me to learn a great deal in the lab. I was able to familiarize myself with the materials and the tasks needed to be done. I worked at Hunter College with great mentors that were patient and helpful throughout this experience. My research allowed me to develop The Model System for the Recombinant Collagen Fragments relating to the Biophysical Studies of Collagen.

Not only was I able to gain a better understanding on a protein collagen that affects everyone's daily lives, but also I became involved with the protein's structure and function that allowed me to understand its purpose better. This research is done to find the cause of collagen's excessive mutations that can lead to bone diseases such as osteoporosis. By learning about collagen fragment, we see how it is helpful and can be harmful to the body.

My work required me to put in some time and effort but what I gained in the end is far worth it. I did a presentation in front of other students in the Harlem Children Society based on my work and this helped me to open up and explain my work in front of other people. This program helped me to appreciate science and the technological aspects of it that I have seen in the lab.

I want to thank all those that made this possible for me, and my mentors who made it worthwhile. Also, I give a special thanks to Dr. Sat and The Harlem Children Society for this opportunity. In the future, this will benefit me especially since I want to work in the medical field and become a doctor. I was able to see my strengths, and work on my weaknesses and I think that is the greatest part of this learning experience.

For me, the sky is the limit, and as long as you know that, opportunities as great as the Harlem Children Society can get you places.
