Derek KenyensoClass of 2005 - Present Bronx High School for Medical Science 2006 Topic: Topic: Analysis of Gene-expressions Data About: It is remarkable the kind of opportunity Dr Sat Bhattacharya and the Harlem Children society have given me over this summer of 2005. They have given me the prospect to explore my interests. I find it incredible what this great man Dr. Sat Bhattacharya is doing. He is giving student the chance to bring out their interests, integrity, curiosity, and enthusiasm to explore the different interest in the medical and research fields. As for me, over this summer, I have learnt the values of determination in getting a project done on time, I have learn the kind of passion my mentor Dr. Jaya Satagopan demonstrates toward her job, I have also learned to do what I love the most. And I would have never had this chance if it wasn’t for Dr. Sat and the Harlem children society. I heard about this program from my school. And I decided to sign up for it. After I signed up for it, it wasn’t actually what I anticipated, because I had to go for an interview with Dr. Sat. I went with other students for the interview. When we there, it was apprehensive because nobody knew what was going to happen and every body was nervous since every body wanted to get the job. But, after Dr. Sat walked in and started talking to us, I was relieved because I found out that he was a humble and a very down to earth person. After the interview was accomplished, I was contacted later that I had gotten the job. So it is them that this magnificent summer experience started. I was put to work at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, where I met the best mentor in the world Dr. Jaya Satagopan. Where I was introduced to Statistics, in my project title Analysis of Gene Expressions. I introduce to the R Statistical package, which I leaned how to use and how to use equations to analyses data between recurrent and non-recurrent prostate cancer patients in two arrays: HU133A array and the HU133B arrays. Every Mondays and Fridays, we have meetings with Dr. Sat that gives each student the opportunity to make a PowerPoint presentation about his/her project so that we can all learn together because the aim of this project is to learn. This superb summer experience will be an experience that I will keep with me forever. It gave the chance to explore new things, learn new thinks and to have fun in doing it. In working in the department I was put it gave me the opportunity to get in-depth into how the work world is. I gain the confidence in pursuing what you want in life and to work heard for them. |
