About:

My name is Simona Morhan and I am a senior at Chadsey International High School in Detroit. At the end of the school year I was asked to apply and write an essay about myself and what career I am interested in. I was very excited when I received the news that I was chosen to participate in the Harlem Children Society program with other two colleagues from my school. Being interested in becoming a doctor, specifically a radiologist, I was placed to work in the Departments of Neurology and Anatomy of Cell Biology, at the University Health Center in Detroit under the guidance of Dr. Kenneth Maiese. In this program I was exposed to many new and interesting things. I participated in experiments taking place in the Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Cerebral Ischemia. I worked with the best doctors in medical field. I familiarized myself with medical concepts that I did not know before. I participated in experiments related to brain cells. Also, I did a lot of research on Diabetes and Oxidative Stress. I read a lot of books and articles on this topic and I wrote a paper. The title of my project is “Oxidative Stress and Diabetes”. This experience inspired and helped me to broaden my horizon in the field of science. Harlem Children Society gave me a great opportunity to research, work and be exposed to the medical environment and because of that I have a better understanding of the field that I will embrace in the future.
