About:

My name is Shabab Naqvi, and I am currently a sophomore at the College of Arts and Sciences at New York University. My summer with the Harlem Children Society proved to be a memorable experience. I conducted research at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons for a second consecutive summer with Dr. Sanil Manavalan who generously took time out to teach me scientific concepts and methods. I learned how to use many fascinating scientific tools, such as the Flow Cytometer, FACS Array machine and UV Spectrophotometer, as I adjusted to the laboratory environment. The internship enabled me to research the immunology of Celiac Disease extensively. Not only did I attain a firm understanding of my mentor’s research, but I got the chance to learn about the research of my peers by the weekly presentations.

I continued my research throughout the school year as well which provided me with more time to fully grasp the methods I learned over the summer. Some of these methods included isolating lymphocytes as well as staining and counting cells.

The Harlem Children Society provided me with valuable hands on experience that will be beneficial for my present and future. The Harlem Children Society helped me understand that medicine is definitely the right field for me.
