Oscar TaboraClass of 2005 Frederick Douglas Academy Topic: Working with Liposomes to Fight Cancer About: I am Oscar Tabora. I am a Hispanic descendent from the Maya-Quiche. I am entering my junior year in High School. My favorite subjects are science and math. My hobbies are constructing model kits, reading, and electronics. I attended the 2005 summer program for Harlem 's Children Society. When I learned of this opportunity, I saw it as the perfect thing to do over the summer. I learned of this program from my teacher Mr. Hearn the day before Dr. Sat Bhattacharya would come to the school. When I first met Dr. Sat Bhattacharya I was nervous, but he made me feel comfortable. The interview went fast and interesting. The commitment to the program involved work hours, meeting hours, and some amount of traveling. The program gave me the opportunity to present my research in Connecticut and Washington DC . I got to interact with students from other schools that I would have never met otherwise. I am glad I got to work in this program and would like to give thanks for allowing me to gain this experience. I am aware of the benefits this program has provided me, besides the experience, the program has given me insight of college work. I hope to continue in the program to help me build my science intellect. Working in the Harlem Children's Society Program has been an experience I will never forget. The chance to work in a real lab with partners, who in my opinion had such amazing intellect, is just an unforgettable experience. Getting to work with chemicals I've only heard of and using them in real experiments was amazing. I learned how to measure Quenching Efficiency, how to split cells, how to make PBS solution, and how to use a G-50 profile. I learned and observed more from this summer than I ever did from any other of my previous science experiences. I had to research a large amount of material to fully understand the project, but I enjoyed it. In the lab my partners were very kind and helpful. I am very grateful for their support. They taught me every program needed how to use, such as the PowerPoint and all of the proper ways to use the machines in the lab. Participating in this program was an awesome experience. |
