Pui Kam TseClass of 2005 - Present H.S. for Dual Language and Asian Studies Topic: 2006 Detecting and Curing Skin Cancer Topic: Hemigraspid Crabs Abundance in Relation Water Temperature and Salinity at Pier 26 in the Hudson River About: This summer had enriched my experiences a lot especially on teaching me how the real scientific work really is and how research work benefits lives. Those valuable experiences that I could not get from school or any other summer programs but in the Harlem Children Society Internship Program. Biology is my favorites branch on science and I had chance to participate in The River Project to deal with marine biology at Pier 26 in the Hudson River this summer. All these fantastic things happened after Dr. Sat visited my school and interview me. The whole interview was comfortable and blithesome: therefore, we had a nice talk for a few minutes interview. Finally, almost the end of the school year I knew I was selected to have an impressive summer to be as an intern. There were more than ten interns participating in The River Project but we all had different projects to deal with. My research topic was hemigrapsid crab abundance in relation to water temperature and salinity at Pier 26 in the Hudson River . I used to work with my partners because they were also doing crab species research. We checked the traps daily to see what we caught and did water chemistry test after traps were checked. The results were recorded and we compiled the voluminous data to see the relationship and tendency of each species. The staff in The River Project did the best to assist us especially in the last day. On that day all the interns had to do the presentation in front of our parents and guests that was a funky experience. Besides the daily works at The River Project gave me some ideas about real scientific work; the lectures on every Monday and Friday were also extremely helpful for me to get to know various regions of science. There were several interns represented their research effort every times. They would talk about what they did specifically and that helped us to explore our interests in different areas. To be a doctor is my dream job and I think I can achieve it. The uncommon experiences that I got from this internship were like a big forward to my goal. |
