My name is Annie Yveliz Velez. I have been attending Thurgood Marshall Academy since I was in the seventh grade until now that I am my current grade is Twelfth. Thurgood Marshall is located on 135th street between St. Nicholas and Edgecombe. I heard about this summer internship, through my principal because she knew I was interested in the medical field. I was one day sitting in my Earth science class last year, when my principal announced my name over the loud speaker to come to the office.
My principal Dr. Johnson had announced three more other students who were also interested in the medical field, she told us about a doctor who worked at a Cancer hospital that was interested in selecting students to participate in this summer program, we all were very happy. Dr. Johnson told us the requirements, we needed to bring the application back filled out, it was a very simple, basic, right to the point application, the four of us needed to bring it back typed with a most recent copy of our resume. Out of the four of us, only two were going to get selected.
A day was then arranged between my principal Dr. Johnson and Dr. Sat to come in and interview the four of us. Dr. Sat first spoke to all four of us about what we were going to be doing if we were the students selected. After Dr. Sat spoke to us, he interviewed us individually. As you can see I was one of the students chosen, and I enjoyed what I did this summer very much. I was very nervous during my interview, but it turned out very well as you can see.
Last year I was working on circulatory tumor cancer cells. The objective of this whole thing was to detect circulating tumor cells, from breast and thyroid patients, by removing blood and looking for markers such as Mammaglobin, and Cytokeratin, this is what Breast and thyroid patients express if they have this certain kind of cancer. I hope that you have enjoyed my piece of writing and what I have experienced.
This year I was working on environmental research. I was studying the factors that lead to the Bronx River becoming so polluted. This summer my experience at ‘Rocking the Boat’ was a great experience. I not only learned about environmental research but I also met new people, and I learned how to row a boat. It was a great and new experience. There are lots of people who are my age and have not done half the things that I have done already.
