* Services for teachers whose students are affiliated with HCS

HCS recognized the importance of the teacher student relationship. We would like to nourish this relationship. We feel that for students to reach their full potential, both the HCS staff and the school faculty need to work together. To bridge this gap, HCS will offer teacher training. HCS will offer teachers a variety of classes, ranges from teacher training to hands-on lab experiences. Experienced teachers and researchers will teach these teacher workshops. These workshops will serve as place to exchange ideas and cultivate new ones. These workshops will provide the opportunity for network building both for teachers and HCS staff. HCS teacher workshops will serve as a forum to deliver information to school regarding programs offered by HCS. The HCS teacher workshop will also help teacher be more prepared to help their students succeed in science competitions and symposiums. Any teacher who has students in HCS should attend these workshops.

In addition to these workshops, HCS will also offer teachers the same hands on lab experiences offered to its students. Teachers will be invited to spend two to three weeks during the summer and throughout the school year on Saturday or Sundays. Teacher will be given the choice to work their student or with a mentor of their own. If choosing to work on their own, teachers will be assigned a research mentor following a discussion regarding their personal interest. Through this experience, teachers will be exposed to cutting edge scientific methods and technology. Research topics include but is not limited to bio/medical, engineering, environmental space, robotics, environmental studies, microbiology.

HCS will offer a stipend to teachers attending these workshops or committing to the lab experience. They will have the possibility of earning “G” credits to be used towards salary differential. Accomplished teachers may be invited to join the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society - a prestigious international research organization with over 200 Nobel Laureates.

As one other way to further our mission, HCS brings enhanced science education to schools and communities . HCS trains public school teachers in innovative models of education and engagement. HCS volunteer mentors – our elite cadre of science experts – visit classrooms where they conduct experiments and demonstrate scientific techniques. By illustrating ways to make science and math more approachable, HCS helps teachers to steer students towards these specific areas of study. Through Science Street Fairs and by harnessing the power of the internet HCS brings high level science, cutting edge technology and compelling issues directly to communities and connects these communities to each other via live-streaming satellite web-casts, downloadable Podcasts and electronic journals.

TEACHER TRAINING:

In all the three phases we propose to train teachers from some of the schools from which the students are chosen in science and math education. Leading experts in science, engineering and mathematics will be invited to give lectures, tutorials, and workshops. For their participation, we intend to pursue, with the NYC department of education, to help in their professional enhancement.
